Solved Question

Junipers

I have a juniper that was doing really well until recently. The needles are turning a dull green and they are starting to brown. What could be wrong. It is planted in Bonsai Soil. I water it regularly. It gets sun approx 8 hours a day.

I am somewhat stumped on this one. I assume you have been dutiful in monitoring your watering of the Juniper? It hasn't been deprived of water or allowed to stay soaked?

The only thing I can think of is the tree is suffering from too much direct sunlight and has a bad case of sunburn but with all the rain in the area I don't see that happening.

One last question though. Do you have any apple trees or crab apple trees on your property?

I will continue to "think" on this one and perhaps someone else has an idea or two on what has caused this problem.

Thanks!

Sorry to hear of you problem. Could you please answer these questions for me? This will help in figuring out what the problem is.

Are you keeping the tree outside or inside your home?

Any sign of bugs?

What other bonsai trees do you have?

Has anyone used a product such as RAID near the tree?

Thanks,

Hi Miriam,

I agree with BonsaiMark, If you can share a little more information with us, we can help troubleshoot why your Junipers needles are turning brown.

The most common reason is your Juniper may not be receiving enough direct sunlight. Junipers generally should be kept outdoors where they can thrive.

send us more infortation so we can help.

I keep it outside on a patio. There are no bugs/insects. I have checked. I have several containers with annuals around the patio which had to be treated with insecticide. Due to the heavy rains we have had in NY there is an infestation of white flies. I used an organic insect killing soap with seaweed extract. would that have caused this? I did not treat the Bonsai with it because the bonsai was clean. I also have a needle juniper bonsai and two fukien tea bonsais. All are doing well. They are all in the same area.

BonsaiMark: Thank you for trying. I don't have any apple or crab trees in the area. It has rained heavily all of May and June however the last two weeks the sun has been quite strong. I will try to protect it from too much sun and see what happens. It is difficult to overwater this particular bonsai since the soil is very porous. I don't think that's the problem. The tree is now growing a new branch which is bright green. I appreciate your help and will keep you posted.
Thanks
