Fall Pruning
Now that we are fully into the fall season, once the bonsai and other trees have dropped their leaves, is this a good time to do some serious pruning? I live in NW Oregon and the leaves are now gone from the bonsai.

Hi Rosey,
What specie of tree do you have. I'm guessing it's a deciduous. Extensive pruning should be done in late winter to early spring, in March or April once the threat of severe cold weather has passed.
Here is a great article from Iowa State University that explains more details: http://www.ipm.iastate.edu/ipm/hortnews/2000/2-11-2000/prunetime.html

TinyRoots, thanks for the feedback. At first I thought I had asked a dumb question but, as I suspected, the timing is more than one would think. Yes, they are deciduous. Someone gave me a tree (paper bark birch, I think, large wood pot) that is at the upper range of what is considered bonsai and there are ugly branch stems sticking out here and there. I can see the potential and I'm glad I asked. I was just about ready to close saw these stems later this week while we have a break in our fall rains. I will wait then. Thank you for the link!
