Solved Question

Winter For Cuttings

I am just starting my very first bonsais! Since it usually is a little quicker, I tried starting some out from cuttings. The trees I recently planted include a maple, birch, juniper, pine, and some other nice bushes in my yard. Now that winter is coming around the corner, I was wondering what I should do for them? Do you guys think it would be smarter to leave them outside in my garage (can get below freezing), or bring them inside (70-80 degrees) until they root. Thanks Everyone!!!!!!

My apologies for taking awhile to get to an answer for you.

First of CONGRATS on trying some cuttings! Just so you know PINES will not root from cuttings. A sad but true fact. The others will root though.

Since you started these this late in the season you can over winter them in a garage or basement that is unheated. Keep them moist as well. Come the spring the rooting process will begin for some of them. Some just won't make it,

Or you can bring them indoors and root them over the winter. You might want to read this article here on rooting cuttings: http://www.learning2bonsai.com/articles/7-obtaining-your-bonsai/83-rooting-cuttings-explained

Please remember that not every cutting will root. Sometimes nothing my root but as you do more cuttings you will get the feel for what a good cutting looks like and your rooting average will grow. Please keep us posted here on how things work out for you. Of course if you have any questions just ask!

Ciao!
