Unsolved Question

juniper, is it indoor or out??

i keep getting mixed answers about juniper trees. i'm hoping to finally get some clarity. what types of climates will it survive? i've heard it's a strictly outside bonsai, i've also heard it can be indoor or outdoor. now just yesterday i heard it can stay outdoors but it has to come inside in tempertures under 30F. so what's what? does it winter outdoors or can it spend the winter inside??

Jason

There is only ONE species of Juniper that I might, stress MIGHT consider keeping indoors and that the San Jose Juniper.

All other juniper species that we associate with bonsai will generally not survive if grown in an indoor environment such as the common home. Now of course your going to find the odd person here and there who will claim that he or she has successfully grown a Juniper Procumbus "Nana" inside and has done so for years. I have yet to see it. Maybe Ashley has but I haven't. Ashley?

If you want to have a successful and healthy bonsai OF ANY KIND you should try to give the tree the conditions it would have in its native habitat. So if you want to try growing a Juniper inside I say GO FOR IT! Just buy a can of Green Spray Paint so you can spray those brown needles green when the poor tree croaks in 6 months!

That is my 2 cents worth on the subject!

Hi Jason,

I have to agree with Mark. The Juniper is an outdoor plant. If you live in the north I would suggest winterizing the plant and moving it to the garage, shed, under a porch, etc... to protect the plant from the elements, but otherwise, outdoors is where it will thrive. I Live in New England and bring I keep my Juniper in the Garage during the winter.
