Winterizing bonzai
I'm confused. When winterizing outdoor bonzai, do you bury the whole pot or remove the tree from its pot to bury? Are the pots (from Bonzai Outlet) designed to withstand a central NJ winter? If you mean remove the tree, do you bundle the root ball in burlap first?

Hi Elena,
There's a great article on this forum that may answer your questions. http://www.learning2bonsai.com/articles/12-seasonal-care/72-winterizing-your-bonsai
I winterize my bonsai tree in my garage. A shed would also be a great place to winterize a bonsai. I've even heard of people placing their trees on the stairs near their bulkhead doors in the basement.
I would not remove your plants from their pot and the pot should not crack during the winter months. I live in Boston and leave the plants in their pot and they have never cracked.
Let us know if the article referenced above is helpful and/or if you have additional questions. I'll try my best to walk you through the process. thank you
