seeds planting
I want to plant some seeds for my bonsai. Is the stratification the best and the faster way? Could you please tell me exactly the steps and the soil that I have to use?

Hi Michalis,
Depending on the type of tree seeds you have, they may need scarification and stratification. Let's say you purchased Japanese Maple Seeds and they were sent to you in the manufacturers packet. Those seeds would need to be scarified (e.g. soaked in hot tap water) and let stand for two days. The purpose of scarification is to soften the seeds hard coat. Once you scarification is complete, then you want to Stratify (e.g. break dormancy). There are many ways to do this and I hope that others provide other examples.
I would first drain the water then i would place the seed in peat moss in a zip lock bag. Place the bag in the fridge for 100 days or so, and sow the seed in soil.
Stratification perios can very from tree-to-tree. Some trees, for example, may only need 30 days.
Hope this helps.

I use regular peat moss for all of my bonsai seeds that we start in the greenhouse. Depending on the seed type the depth it is placed into the soil varies. Some seeds like to be buried rather deep and others prefer to sit on top of the soil with just a sprinkle of soil on top of them. If you purchased seeds in a packet this information should be on the packet in the instructions.
Please remember that not all the seeds you plant will grow. Germination rates will vary from one species to another by 50% or more and sometimes even from year to year with the same parent plant. So don't feel like a failure if think your success rate is lower than it should be.
I hope this helps.
